Position Overview

We are currently looking for a junior estimator for our downtown Calgary location. Reporting to the Manager of Estimating, this position requires a strong team player with excellent communication skills, solid organizational and planning skills, the ability to work independently, and a strong drive for success.

This is an entry-level position and prior industry knowledge, while beneficial, is not required to apply. This position is not eligible for working remotely.

The junior estimator is responsible for the creation of tender proposals for our customers. Selected tasks for this role include: performing accurate mechanical quantity takeoffs (including pipe, steel, vessels, and piles), preparation of Request for Quotations (RFQs), developing cost breakdown structures and associated pricing for open bids, scheduling work using various scheduling tools, and be able to autonomously develop cost estimates using Alstar methodologies in Excel, Google Sheets, and other software.

This position will be based out of our downtown location, but may at times require working at our fabrication facility in Calgary, at 8700 Venture Ave SE. It is expected that 5% – 10% of working time may be required at this location. This location is not Calgary Transit – accessible and transportation is not provided by Alstar.

This position is eligible to earn hours towards achieving the P.Eng (Professional Engineer) designation, under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer.

Position-Specific Accountabilities

  • Review Client RFP documents including Scope Of Work
  • Identify Commercial Document payment terms, hourly rates inclusions, and contract types
  • Bid Task Assignments
  • Work with Project Managers/Estimating team to develop Project Budgets, Construction Execution Plans, Manpower Loading, and Tender Proposals
  • Perform accurate quantity take-offs; weld inches for mechanical piping, structural steel quantities, steel, and pipe BOMs, and similar, with minimal supervision
  • Prepare, track, evaluate and follow up on RFQs
  • Assist with Clarifications surrounding tender submissions
  • Develop detailed Construction Schedules in MS Project/Primavera P6
  • Assist Estimating team with Change Control Management including bid addendums and RFQ revisions
  • Identify and develop bid estimates in accordance with project payment requirements
  • Share learning experiences in a team environment to promote ongoing development
  • Complete other duties, projects, and special assignments as required

Requirements

  • Technically and mathematically inclined with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Data analysis skills include working with tables, data aggregation, charts, and trending
  • Ability to work within the Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc)
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets as an asset
  • Experience with Microsoft Project and/or Primavera is an asset
  • Expert organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • The ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and with confidence is essential
  • Self-directed, able to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • The high degree of competence, reliability, and judgment demonstrated in all aspects of the work
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Comfortable interacting with external stakeholders, i.e. clients and vendors
  • Good understanding of technical writing including reporting/formatting

Knowledge, Training, & Education

  • Engineering, quantity surveyor, or construction management background/education is preferred.
  • Certifications with APEGA, AACEI, or PMI would be an asset but are not required.
  • Zero to two (2) years of related work or industry experience. Training will be provided to the successful candidate.
  • Intermediate computer skills including familiarity with spreadsheets and word processing; experience working in G Suite is an asset
  • Experience using estimating and/or project management systems would be an asset
    • Proficiency in Navisworks and other Autodesk products is considered an asset
